| Rob Zaleski: UW team aims to aid New Orleans bayou
Kate Tillery Danzer had been bracing for the worst. She had seen TV footage in August 2005 of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina. She read numerous accounts of the horrifying aftermath and the shockingly inept response of FEMA and other government agencies. And she had talked to her colleagues on the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Water Resources Management team who'd already begun work on a project to determine the feasibility of restoring Bayou Bienvenue, a cypress swamp next to the poor Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans, which had been particularly hard hit. But when the 33-year-old UW grad student was given a tour of the neighborhood upon arriving in New Orleans last June -- nearly two years after the worst natural disaster in U.S. history -- she was shaken to the core.
When help was needed, Providence answered the call
The Bruins are 6-4-2 since Nokelainen's arrival. And a big reason for those 14 points - all without Patrice Bergeron - has been the play of the Providence call-ups. "I thought our fourth line had a great game tonight," said coach Claude Julien of Sobotka and Nokelainen, who skated with Jeremy Reich in last night's 4-1 loss to the Lightning. Sobotka is playing his first year of professional hockey, but the 20-year-old center from the Czech Republic, both skilled and gritty (7 goals, 7 assists in 15 games with Providence), was promoted when Lucic suffered a concussion Nov. 23. Since his promotion, Sobotka has played in four straight games, recording two shots and four hits. Nokelainen, acquired from the Islanders for center Ben Walter, has been consistent both at center and right wing during his 11-game stint in Boston.

When I was in middle school and my eldest sister was away at college, I would help myself to her bitchin' collection of concert tees that she left behind in her bedroom... which I had taken over. I got so many compliments from the older kids on my Echo and the Bunnymen shirt. Didn't know who they hell they were, but thought it was cool. Midnight Oil and INXS were faves too. And I loved her Dream of the Blue Turtle tee from Sting's first solo tour. I'm going on about all this because the big news today is that the Police are reuniting for the Grammys, which take place on February 11. This is a big deal because, as my sis could tell ya all about, they all hated each other when the Police dissolved in 1984. The biggest drama took place between Sting and Stuart Copeland, who probably fought over whose frostilocks looked better.
Tigers, Volunteers take state rivalry to national stage
Cincinnati and Ohio State played each other twice in the 1960s as No. 1 vs. No. 2, and Duke and North Carolina met twice in the 1990s. Those last two games were Atlantic Coast Conference matchups. This game? Well, Memphis belongs to the lightly regarded Conference USA, while Tennessee is in the Southeastern Conference. They are playing for the third time in an eight-year deal in basketball, the sport Memphis uses to get Tennessee to play the Tigers in football. The Tigers (26-0) are putting their perfect record and the nation's longest home-court winning streak at 47 games on the line. "Them. Us. Everybody in the state. It's an ego game," Memphis coach John Calipari said. "That game has been played up to alevel that I can't even begin to tell you." It's the game Tennessee didn't want right now.
Larry Craig sets out to prove you don't have to be Al Gore to win an ...
Denny Crane is a classic Hollywood conservative, who joins Stephen Colbert, Thurston Howell III, Alex Keaton, and Krusty the Clown on Wikipedia's list of "Fictional United States Republicans." TV conservatives always play the part for laughs; Craig plays it straight, with the same result. In this case, fiction cannot be stranger than truth, but perhaps it will be more revealing. Spoilerfix says Alan Shore (James Spader) will defend Crane, so we'll finally get a glimpse of how a spirited defense might have sounded if Craig hadn't pled guilty. Of course, unlike Craig, Crane has five ex-wives and several co-workers who can vouch for his womanizing. He also has better writers, who won't humiliate him with Craig lines like "Jiminy!" and "Oh, crimey!" Spoilerfix doesn't say whether Crane's restroom encounter is a one-off deal or will come back to haunt him.
Finer Things: Newest Ducati bike sets hearts racing
In the motorcycle world, there are Harleys, BMWs, Kawasakis and Hondas. And then there are Ducatis. The Italian motorcycle company recently announced the rollout of the Desmosedici RR, a $72,500 street-legal bike capable of reaching 200 mph. Actor Tom Cruise is among the 1,500 buyers of the limited-edition motorcycle. "Somebody put it as 'the thinking man's Harley,' " says Greg Mellinger, owner of MCC Motor Cycle Center, a European motorcycle dealership in Villa Park. At least two Chicago-area collectors are on the list for the Desmosedici, but both, through Mr. Mellinger, declined to be interviewed. Tribune Co. Chairman and CEO Sam Zell, a well-known Ducati fan who attempted to buy the motorcycle company in 1996, declined to comment on whether he was one of them.
