FAU could turn away 2,000 students due to budget cuts

Florida Atlantic University could turn away 2,000 students and be forced to slash as much as $16.8 million from its budget next school year if the state's bleak financial picture doesn't improve.

Ken Jessell, vice president for financial affairs, presented what he considers a worst-case scenario to members of the Board of Trustees at a meeting Wednesday.

Florida's 11 universities are dealing with potential cuts of $92.4 million this year, and more next year, after Florida's weak economy and poor housing market resulted in less money for the state.

Dreamliner-induced nightmares

Biggest challenge: Monitoring the financial progress of the 787 Dreamliner, whose delivery has been delayed twice due to production snafus.

A little more than a year into his new job, Mr. Bell was appointed interim CEO following the resignation of Harry Stonecipher in what was the second major ethics scandal to hit Boeing in as many years.

Rather than shaking his confidence in his employer, Mr. Bell says he saw his four-month appointment "as a vote of confidence in the whole Boeing team and a recognition of the key strategic role today's CFOs play in helping run the business."

Now back at his original post, Mr. Bell is again focused on overseeing the finances of the world's biggest aerospace company and reporting to investors.

He's also focused on taking care of his current boss, Boeing Chairman and CEO James McNerney Jr.

Savard restates goal: Commit to making playoffs

The Blackhawks returned to work Monday afternoon, and the good news for them was their boss had calmed down a bit.

The Hawks hit the ice in Bensenville for their first practice since Denis Savard's postgame tirade after Thursday night's 1-0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, and the coach put his club through a nearly two-hour practice that featured plenty of hitting and hard work.

"They really acted like professionals, and I expected that out of that group," Savard said. "I wasn't pleased with [Thursday's performance]. The message was pretty clear, and they responded."

Kind pledges support to Obama

Ron Kind, D-La Crosse, pledged his superdelegate vote to Barack Obama on Wednesday after 57 percent of Democratic voters in his congressional district went for the Illinois senator in Tuesday's presidential primary."Sen. Obama's message of change and unity resonated with voters in Wisconsin as it has with voters across the country," Kind said. "My constituents overwhelmingly chose Barack Obama to be their nominee, and I am proud to pledge my superdelegate vote to him as well."
Kind's support widened Obama's lead over New York Sen. Hillary Clinton five to two. Because of proportional voting, three regular delegates from the 3rd Congressional District will go to Obama and three to Clinton.Superdelegates can back whoever they want, regardless of the primary vote, and could determine the party's nominee at this summer's convention if neither candidate has enough delegates to lock it up before then.Wisconsin has 18 superdelegates.
