Willy Northpole and the Phoenix hip-hop scene explode

Another excerpt from the manuscript that I particularly enjoyed is The Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes by Donald Jackson. A backdrop of pastel-colored squares is stamped across both pages. Repeated circular imprints of geometric patterns dance throughout the composition and gold specks randomly decorate the entire surface like a splash of 24-carat confetti. Among the gorgeous chaos are black outlines of two fish and five golden circles of bread. Jackson chooses a fish design taken from an ancient mosaic in Tabgha (the traditional site of the event), and the basket geometry is borrowed from Anasazi designs. As a product of today's politically correct world, Jackson intends to reach a broad anthropological spectrum.

The Walters Art Museum portion is for the history buffs. It showcases a 500-year-old leaf from the very first Bible printed on Gutenberg's press.

Wild Card -- Weekend

Not for everyone. It's a kid story, after all. And mebbe that's why Wilson's Lewis is so appealing. The guy had so many warts (as I do) and yet he produced the wonderful Narnia series, as well as "Screwtape Letters," "The Great Divorce," "Mere Christianity," etc. Mebbe there's hope for me, yet. Soldier on.

Suspect in Ohio School Stabbing Dies

A man charged into a school where his estranged wife was a teacher Thursday morning, firing a gun before stabbing her as her fifth-grade class watched, police said. He later was found dead in his home after apparently shooting himself during a standoff with police.

The teacher, Christi Layne, underwent surgery and "should be fine," her lawyer told The Columbus Dispatch. Personnel at Cabell Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., where she being treated, would not release her condition Thursday night.

Police originally said William Michael Layne shot his wife at Notre Dame Elementary, but Chief Charles Horner said it was unclear whether a gunshot fired in the school hit her.

Minutes before the teacher was stabbed, police say her husband stabbed and wounded a different woman in an alley about five blocks from the school.

Lawmen arrest 2 in Lufkin motel meth bust

Authorities on Wednesday surprised two men and a woman in a Lufkin motel room that contained the kind of equipment used to cook methamphetamine.

Inside a corner room at Motel 6 on Timberland Drive, investigators acting on an anonymous tip found a couple ounces of unfinished meth — nearly three times what the department typically finds, said investigator Allen Hill of the Angelina County Sheriff's Office.

Lufkin police arrested Scott Hodge and Matthew Sherman, charging both with manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance. The woman was detained and later released.

Several glass bottles filled with chemicals cluttered the dresser of motel room 148 as investigators identified the contents of each.

Hill said the smell of toxic chemicals, including red phosphorus, camping fuel and antifreeze, was overpowering in the room when investigators surprised the three inside.

Downtown indoor play center leaps ahead with panel's OK of Day Frog

The growing number of young parents living downtown will soon have an indoor playground to take their antsy toddlers during the dead of winter, thanks to a bureaucratic roadblock removed this week.

At the behest of downtown Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd), the City Council's License Committee approved an ordinance that will pave the way for the Day Frog indoor play center, 233 East Erie, to get a "public place of amusement" (PPA) license, even though the site is located across the street from Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

City law currently prohibits PPA licenses from being issued within 200 feet of churches, hospitals and schools. In this case, the red tape was apparently wound too tight.

"The current ordinance is a bit clumsy. It's intended to keep bars away from hospitals and schools.

Oshkosh falls in first round

Tyriver lead the team in points with 19 and rebounds as both her and freshman Tiffany Pugh had nine. Boeder ended the game with 17 points. She converted on her first seven shots finishing 7-9. “Coach told us to keep taking it to the hoop and when we drive to open up lanes and it opened up for me and I just kept taking it," said Boeder. Tyriver will be missed next season and it's never fun for the season to end, but Schumacher has a lot of young talent that she is excited to have back for next season. “Even though it was a 22-point loss, I think there are a lot of positive things you can take out of this game and build on for next year," said Schumacher.

Update: Library Has 10 Copies of "Water for Elephants"

Of course, they don't add back the time you've spent being debriefed or watching them fumble around because they weren't properly trained or their computers were outdated or upgraded. None of this is the fault of clerks. They're just doing their jobs. The fault lies with managers who've decided to do inventory and marketing on your time -- Gary Crooks/Smart Bombs.
