Topa more eatery than tavern

The words "tavern and grill" conjure up a dim and smoky ambience, with a grillman flipping greasy burgers behind a counter. Nothing could be further from that image than Topa Tavern and Grill in Elk Grove Village.

An open, airy space, the former location of Cucina Roma presents cleanly elegant lines, glossy, dark wood floor and tables, and creamy walls.

More restaurant than tavern, the upscale spot serves an easy-to-like, mix-it-up, something-for-everyone menu of Italian- and Asian-influenced dishes, steaks and dressed-up versions of old-fashioned American comfort fare. Choices range from burgers to offbeat specials such as banana-crusted tilapia.

Brothers Tony and Paul Diaz -- the To and Pa behind Topa -- launched the restaurant in October. The pair spent years working at the Rosewood Restaurant in Rosemont, where their father is a partner, and Paul ultimately became dining manager and sommelier.

Advanced Life Sciences Announces Successful Thorough QT Study Of ...

Advanced Life Sciences Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADLS), announced positive results from Trial CL07-001, a thorough QT study of the Company's novel once-a-day oral antibiotic, cethromycin. This study was conducted to evaluate the cardiac safety of cethromycin and to enhance the safety database for the Company's upcoming New Drug Application (NDA) submission for cethromycin to treat community acquired pneumonia (CAP). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires thorough QT studies for all new chemical entities because prolongation in QT interval (corrected for changes in heart rate, or QTc) may signify an increased risk of developing cardiac arrhythmias.

Trial CL07-001 evaluated the potential of cethromycin to cause a prolongation in electrocardiographic QT interval in accordance with FDA and ICH E14 guidance.

Ex-Circulair owner James Larkin vanishes after flight to Hong Kong

A Chicago fan manufacturer wants to pay its former owner more than $3 million, but there's a hitch: He has vanished.

Relatives of James Larkin say he was last seen boarding a flight to Hong Kong with his second wife last fall just a few months after he suffered a debilitating stroke. Neither checked bags for the trip, the family later learned.

On Wednesday, a Cook County probate judge, agreeing the case constituted an emergency, appointed Larkin's brother, Jerome, a prominent Chicago attorney, as his temporary guardian.
