| Izzy takes pals on excellent RV adventure
JUPITER, Fla. — Boredom is the fuel of so many road trips. Jason Isringhausen and a few other Cardinals pitchers let the tedium of the early daze of February take them places a few weeks ago. Here they sat around the spring training clubhouse, realizing that there weren't many teammates around, there wasn't anything to do on a Saturday night and, dadgum, none of them planned to work out on Sunday anyway. So, Isringhausen organized the obvious. They were going to go RV'ing. "There weren't that many people here, there wasn't that much to do," Isringhausen said. "Seemed like a thing to do." And where else do you take an RV than … the infield at Daytona. Isringhausen scored passes for the 30th annual Budweiser Shootout at the Daytona International Speedway.
Nizhny Novgorod Region
The new town's convenient location at the confluence of two great rivers, the Volga and the Oka, determined its main tasks: protection against invasions and development of trade. From the very beginning the town was surrounded by a moat, and a wooden Kremlin was erected. In 1350, Nizhny Novgorod became the capital of the Nizhny Novgorod principality. The prince's palace, stone cathedrals, and monasteries were built in the Kremlin. The new capital began to develop trade and crafts and began to construct a new system of fortifications and mint its own coins. Nizhny Novgorod became the cultural center of Russia. In the 14th century, both the great Russian philosopher Pavel Visoky and the talented painter Prokhor (the predecessor of Andrei Rublev) lived here, and the monk Lavrenti wrote a chronicle of Russian history.
Bernanke In Hot Seat As Market Turmoil Spikes
The short and oversimplified answer can be summed up in three words: the Great Depression," columnist Steven Pearlstein wrote in The Washington Post newspaper. Others are rallying to Bernanke's defense. Alan Reynolds, a senior fellow at the free-market Cato Institute, contrasted Bernanke's management with the Fed's stance during the 1990-1991 recession under former chairman Alan Greenspan. "Regardless of whether the Fed's actions prove excessive or inadequate, it would be unreasonable to describe them as too little or too late," Reynolds said, pointing out that the Greenspan Fed kept the fed funds rate much higher during the early 1990s recession. With market volatility persisting and the Fed due to meet January 29-30 to mull rates further, the focus on Bernanke is not likely to ease any time soon.

Roads were slick throughout the region and there were hundreds of accidents, but Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged people to look on the bright side. "The timing is perfect, if you think about it," he said. "We'll have the whole weekend to clean up the mess." If that didn't cheer up his constituents, the mayor also announced that free hot chocolate and free sled rentals were available Friday at one park in each of the city's five boroughs. Half a foot of snow fell in New York City. Up to a foot was forecast in suburban counties, and up to 9 inches fell in parts of Connecticut. Storm warnings extended northward across Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. In many places, snow was changing over to rain, sometimes freezing rain. The storm was not unusual for mid-February, but it was easily the New York area's most significant storm of the winter.
